Sri Lanka has officially welcomed over 1.5 million international tourists by 18 August 2025, marking a significant milestone for the country’s tourism industry. According to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), total arrivals stood at 1,500,656 as of 3:00 PM on 18 August.

The country has witnessed strong momentum this year, with 129,226 tourists arriving in just the first 18 days of August, including more than 100,000 arrivals in the first two weeks alone. This performance represents a notable improvement compared to the same period in 2024, supported by double-digit growth in most months.

Industry experts attribute this surge to Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage, major events such as the Kandy Esala Perahera, and rising visitor numbers from key markets including India, the United Kingdom, and Italy.

With the peak winter season ahead, authorities are optimistic that the sector will surpass its year-end targets, further solidifying Sri Lanka’s position as one of South Asia’s fastest-growing travel destinations.
