New Survey Sets Average Tourist Daily Spend in Sri Lanka at USD 148.26

Sri Lanka has finalized the average daily expenditure per non-package tourist at USD 148.26 for the 2024/2025 tourism year, based on a comprehensive survey of 10,000 inbound visitors. The figure, which excludes airfare, reflects current spending behavior and economic conditions and has been confirmed in consultation with Tourism Satellite Account experts to ensure methodological accuracy.

In comparison, the average daily expenditure recorded in the 2018/2019 Inbound Visitor Survey stood at USD 181.1 from a sample of 5,000 visitors. That period is widely regarded as the last stable benchmark before global tourism was affected by the pandemic and subsequent economic adjustments. A preliminary analysis carried out between July and December 2024, involving 3,300 respondents, had indicated an interim average of USD 171.74. However, the complete year-round data set revealed a further adjustment in traveler spending patterns, resulting in the finalized value of USD 148.26.

Tourism analysts attribute this shift to a combination of factors, including inflation trends in key source markets, changes in the Sri Lankan rupee’s exchange rate against the US dollar, and evolving post-pandemic travel habits such as slightly shorter stays and more selective spending. The updated figure will now serve as the official reference for tourism revenue forecasting, policy formulation, and strategic planning for the sector.

The findings come at a time when Sri Lanka continues to strengthen its position as a competitive destination in the region, with tourism authorities and industry stakeholders focusing on enhancing value, improving visitor experience, and promoting sustainable travel growth.
