Tourists gearing up to hit the waves in Arugambay
- Industry surpasses 1.5mn arrivals for 2025 – 50% of year’s target
- However, it still faces a steep climb to reach its ambitious target of 3mn visitors for 2025
- Daily arrivals in August are averaging 7,602, placing full-month forecast at around 235,700
Sri Lanka’s tourism industry has surpassed 1.5 million arrivals for 2025, boosted by strong inflows in August.
However, it still faces a steep climb to reach its ambitious target of three million visitors for the year.
The data from the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority showed 129,226 arrivals in the first 17 days of August, an 18.4 percent increase from the 109,159 visitors recorded a year earlier.
The inflows pushed the cumulative arrivals to 1,497,514 by August 17, with the 1.5 million milestone crossed yesterday (August 18).
The daily arrivals in August are averaging 7,602, placing the full-month forecast at around 235,700. That would not only surpass the 164,609 visitors recorded in August 2024 but also challenge the all-time high of 200,359 set in August 2018.
The peak coincides with the Kandy Esala Perahera, one of the country’s most popular cultural festivals.
India continued to dominate as the top source market, contributing 28,380 visitors or 22 percent of August arrivals. The United Kingdom followed with 14,071 tourists (10.9 percent). Year-to-date, the top five markets are India (307,502), the UK (145,448), Russia (117,681), Germany (92,841) and China (87,207).
Despite the momentum, the sector must attract an additional 1.5 million visitors in just over four months to meet its target, requiring a sharp acceleration to more than 11,000 arrivals per day.
Based on the current trajectory, the annual inflows are projected at around 2.4 million, leaving a possible shortfall of about 600,000.
