Train services on the Badulla–Ambewela section of Sri Lanka’s iconic Upcountry Railway Line officially resumed this morning (20), following the completion of extensive repairs after severe damage caused by Cyclone Ditwah.

Marking the return of rail connectivity to the region, a special Udarata Menike train operated with a Class S14 power set departed Badulla for Ambewela at 8.00 a.m., symbolising a major milestone in the post-disaster recovery process. This journey marked the first train movement along this stretch in 23 days since rail operations were suspended due to the cyclone.

According to the Railway Department, several regular train services between Badulla and Ambewela will operate from today, restoring a vital transport link for local communities while reviving access to one of Sri Lanka’s most scenic railway corridors.

The resumption ceremony was attended by Minister Samantha Vidyaratne, Deputy Minister of Tourism Ruwan Ranasinghe, and senior railway and government officials. Speaking at the event, officials highlighted the importance of the Upcountry Railway Line not only for daily commuters but also for tourism, as the route passes through tea plantations, mist-covered hills, and popular destinations such as Haputale and Ambewela.

The restoration of services is expected to provide a significant boost to upcountry tourism and livelihoods, reaffirming Sri Lanka’s commitment to quickly rebuilding critical infrastructure following natural disasters.
