High-level discussions are reportedly underway regarding the potential appointment of Buddhika Hewawasam, Chairman of Sri Lanka Tourism, as the next Chairman of SriLankan Airlines, according to unofficial sources familiar with the matter.

The development follows the resignation of Sarath Ganegoda, who stepped down as Chairman of SriLankan Airlines and SriLankan Catering, effective 31 March 2026. In a statement, SriLankan Airlines confirmed that A.K.D.D. Dimal Arandara will serve as Acting Chairman of both entities until a permanent appointment is made by the government.

Sources indicate that the government holds a favourable view of Hewawasam’s leadership, particularly in light of Sri Lanka Tourism’s strong performance under his stewardship. During a pivotal period for the industry, he worked closely with the line ministry to guide the sector to a historic milestone in 2025, when Sri Lanka recorded 2.36 million tourist arrivals – the highest number ever achieved by the country.

Despite facing significant challenges, including the disruptive impact of Cyclone Ditwah at the end of 2025 and fuel-related pressures stemming from tensions in the Middle East, Hewawasam is widely credited with maintaining momentum and delivering consistent outcomes for the tourism industry during one of its most challenging periods.

Hewawasam also brings valuable aviation sector experience, having previously held senior roles at SriLankan Airlines. He began his career at the airline’s International Aviation Academy, the training arm of the national carrier, further strengthening his credentials for a potential leadership role.

More recently, Hewawasam publicly outlined plans to reposition Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA) as a tourism-focused gateway. The strategy emphasises Mattala’s proximity to key tourist destinations in the southern and eastern regions, supported by airline engagement initiatives and targeted marketing efforts aimed at stimulating route development and increasing passenger traffic.

Political sources also suggest that the National People’s Power (NPP) administration has strong confidence in Hewawasam’s professional background and crisis management capabilities. His marketing expertise and public-sector leadership experience are seen as key strengths that could help steer SriLankan Airlines at a critical juncture.

Aviation Voice reached out to Hewawasam for comment; however, he was overseas at the time of publication and unavailable to respond.

An official announcement regarding the appointment is expected once the government concludes its evaluation process.
