Celebrating one of the world’s most remarkable natural wonders, Sigiriya Village Hotel has partnered with CameraLK and Sony Electronics Sri Lanka to spotlight the awe-inspiring phenomenon of the Minneriya Elephant Gathering.
Centuries ago, King Mahasen engineered the historic Minneriya reservoir to sustain a civilization. Today, as seasonal dry spells shrink the reservoir, the fertile, exposed grassland transforms into a grand stage for nature’s own spectacle drawing hundreds of wild Asian elephants from surrounding forests in what is recognized as the largest wild Asian elephant congregation on Earth.
To bring this extraordinary convergence of ancient engineering and raw instinct to life, Sigiriya Village Hotel hosted a specialized safari expedition alongside leading imaging brands, prominent digital creators, and esteemed wildlife experts:
Dr. Ruchira Somaweera – National Geographic Explorer, Creator of RuGoesWild, and Adjunct Associate Professor at Murdoch University.
Prof. Devaka K. Weerakoon – Senior Professor of Zoology & Environmental Sciences, University of Colombo.
The team ventured beyond standard postcard visuals to unveil the hidden stories and scientific marvel behind this seasonal congregation. The expedition also served as an exclusive field-testing ground for Sony’s newest flagship prime lenses the FE 400mm F4.5 GM and FE 600mm F6.3 GM. Celebrated as the lightest super-telephoto primes in their respective categories, these lenses allowed creators and experts to capture intimate, high-definition moments of the herds effortlessly across the open plains.
Through this premier collaboration, Sigiriya Village Hotel, CameraLK, and Sony Electronics unite world class hospitality, next generation imaging technology, and scientific expertise to share the magic of Sri Lanka’s greatest wildlife spectacle with an international audience.
