Bhutan has taken a bold step into the future of travel by launching the world’s first national crypto tourism payment system, partnering with Binance Pay and DK Bank.
The new system, introduced in May 2025, allows international visitors to pay for nearly every aspect of their Bhutan experience using cryptocurrency from air tickets and hotel stays to monument entry fees and local market purchases. More than 100 cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin (BTC), Binance Coin (BNB), and USD Coin (USDC), are accepted seamlessly through QR-code-based transactions.
What sets this initiative apart is its nationwide integration. Over 100 businesses, ranging from luxury resorts to small rural vendors, now accept crypto. Even stallholders with only a smartphone can receive real-time payments in the Bhutanese Ngultrum, offering digital inclusion like never before.
This innovative move aligns perfectly with Bhutan’s long-standing values of sustainability and Gross National Happiness (GNH). The country, already a leader in green energy through its hydropower resources, is positioning itself as a crypto-forward yet environmentally conscious destination.
By eliminating traditional banking hurdles and appealing to the growing community of digital-savvy travelers, Bhutan is not only boosting post-pandemic tourism but also future-proofing its economy.
From the peaks of the Himalayas to the alleys of Paro, tourists can now explore Bhutan with nothing more than a smartphone and a crypto wallet—truly a leap into the future of sustainable travel.
