Sri Lanka is poised to significantly expand its tourism infrastructure by officially gazetting 20 new tourist zones before November. Buddhika Hewawasam, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), confirmed that the designation process is currently underway. This strategic expansion is designed to accelerate visitor arrivals and enhance the island nation’s status as a top-tier global travel destination.

The initiative arrives amidst a robust recovery for Sri Lanka’s tourism sector, which has seen impressive growth this year. Recent data highlights that 1,076,487 international tourists have visited the country during the current period under review.

India remains the strongest driver of this tourism resurgence, retaining its position as the leading source market. So far, 272,099 Indian tourists have chosen Sri Lanka as their holiday destination, underscoring the strong and enduring travel ties between the two neighboring nations.
