The main air traffic control tower and radar centre of the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake have commenced operations fully utilising digital technology.

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Aviation announced that the control tower and radar centre will control aircraft for arrival and departure at BIA.

The new system will facilitate real-time dissemination of essential data to pertinent nodes, resulting in a 100% increase in data accuracy, especially regarding plane safety.

Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd. invested Rs.1.2 billion to establish the new system.
