The Rotary Club has initiated a significant project to reconstruct and upgrade approximately 1,500 schools damaged by the recent cyclonic storm. A primary focus of this reconstruction effort is the integration of smart classrooms to modernize the learning environment for students in need.
Professor Chandana Jayaratne, Chairman of the Rotary District Social Service Committee, stated that these smart classrooms are being prioritized for schools located in the most remote areas of the country. He clarified that while schools that were completely destroyed will undergo different reconstruction processes, the smart classroom initiative is being extended to all other affected schools.
Beyond providing modern infrastructure, Professor Jayaratne emphasized that these smart classrooms are intended to serve as a practical solution to address teacher shortages in rural regions. The project is already well underway, with the first phase seeing the installation of two smart classrooms each in five selected schools. Looking ahead, the initiative is set to expand further, with plans currently in place to provide an additional 50 smart classrooms to schools identified under this program.
