A major new tourism initiative aimed at transforming Sri Lanka’s southern region was officially launched yesterday with the inauguration of the “Southern Mist Triangle,” bringing together the districts of Galle, Matara, and Rathnapura as a flagship tourism development zone.
The project is expected to position the southern region as a leading destination for sustainable tourism, cultural preservation, and community-based development by connecting mist-covered highlands, rainforest borders, tea plantations, and culturally significant landscapes across the three districts.
Tourism stakeholders, government officials, and regional representatives attended the inauguration event, highlighting the importance of integrated tourism planning and sustainable destination development in Sri Lanka.
The Southern Mist Triangle initiative aims to promote environmentally responsible tourism while creating economic opportunities for local communities. Officials noted that the project will focus on balancing tourism growth with heritage conservation and environmental sustainability.
The development zone is also expected to strengthen regional connectivity and showcase the diverse natural and cultural attractions found across southern Sri Lanka, creating a unified tourism identity for the area.
Industry leaders praised the collaborative effort behind the initiative, emphasizing that the project could become a model for future regional tourism development projects in Sri Lanka.
